Concert Sunday May 25

We have some exciting news for the Juneau Wind Ensemble!

The Fall 2013 Concert is being conducted by guest conductor, Dr. Dwayne Corbin, Assistant Professor of Music at Simpson University, Redding, CA.  Dr. Corbin is a percussionist extraordinaire, and has performed several times with the Juneau Symphony, once as featured soloist.  He is the director of the wind ensemble at Simpson Univ., and also directs the Shasta Symphony Orchestra.  Dwayne has a special interest in conducting wind bands.

The board of the Juneau Wind Ensemble pursued and received a grant from the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council to assist with this special project.  Dr. Corbin is pleased to report that Simpson University is providing a travel grant to cover airfare to Juneau.

Dwayne is currently choosing program material, but from hints he has already made, you can expect a rewarding concert.

We will likely also feature some smaller subsections of the band, a solo or concerto piece, and we may be joined by select students from TMHS.

To accomplish all this exciting stuff, we need a special commitment from all Juneau Wind Ensemble players.  Our normal rehearsals will be starting Saturday, Sept. 21, under the direction of the preparatory conductors.  Dwayne will be arriving Friday, Nov. 8, and the Saturday rehearsal on Nov. 9 will be under his direction.  The following week (week before the concert) will be quite intensive.  We will rehearse Tues., Thurs., and Fri. evenings, as well as our normal Saturday morning rehearsal on Nov. 16.  We will be performing Sunday afternoon Nov. 17 at either TMHS or the JAAC.

If you would like to play in the concert, please commit to attending rehearsals, and especially the intense final week.

About Us...

The Juneau Community Bands is a group of musicians and wind groups rehearsing and performing in Juneau, Alaska. Groups that are included are:
  • Juneau Wind Ensenble: This group is for advanced adult musicians who, typically, have played in high school or college. The group presents two concerts a year playing exciting and challenging music for brass, wind, and percussion ensembles.
  • Juneau Volunteer Marching Band: The Marching Band was organized to provide music for the Juneau parade in 1976. All musicians, teenage and older, are invited to participate. The band begins rehearsals each year in late May in preparation for the 4th of July. The band traditionally performs one or two sit-down concerts prior to the 4th, and marches in both the Juneau and Douglas parades.
